CAIS Testing

The Charlotte Area Independent Schools (CAIS) is a group of private and independent schools in the Charlotte area that share joint admissions standards and a single standardized testing requirement. Instead of testing separately at each school, your child completes one cognitive evaluation with a designated CAIS psychologist, and the results are shared with every member school you apply to.

Genesis Clinical is a designated CAIS testing provider for Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 1 applicants (WPPSI-IV).

CAIS Admissions Testing: WPPSI-IV (2027-2028)

We offer official standardized cognitive evaluations for children applying to Pre-Kindergarten, Kindergarten, and Grade 1 at Charlotte Area Independent Schools (CAIS). As a designated CAIS testing provider, our 1-on-1 evaluation is recognized by all participating member schools—allowing your child to complete testing just one time for all of your applications.

Assessment Overview

Test: Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence – Fourth Edition (WPPSI-IV)
Eligible Applicants: Pre-Kindergarten, Junior Kindergarten, Kindergarten, and Grade 1
Appointment Duration: 1 Hour (1-on-1 session)
Fee: $300
Age Requirement: Children must be at least 4 years old on or before the date of testing

Important Note: Cognitive evaluations can only be administered once within a 12-month period. For bilingual or ESL applicants, an additional Nonverbal Index score is available upon request

Scheduling Opens: Tuesday after Labor Day
TK / JK / Kindergarten Applicants:
- School Application Deadline: January 2, 2027
- Testing Completion Deadline: February 1, 2027
- School Notification Date: February 26, 2027
- Parent Reply / Contract Deadline: March 5, 2027
Grade 1 Applicants:
- School Application Deadline: January 15, 2027
- Testing Completion Deadline: February 26, 2027
- School Notification Date: April 9, 2027
- Parent Reply / Contract Deadline: April 16, 2027

Results & Optional Feedback

Score Delivery: Upon completion of the evaluation, test results will be sent directly to parents and your designated CAIS schools.
Optional Feedback Consultation: If you would like a detailed interpretation of your child's scores, an optional feedback meeting can be scheduled and will be billed at the standard hourly rate.

Tips for a Positive Testing Experience

To help your child perform at their natural best, keep these quick tips in mind:

Keep It Simple: Explain the visit in a calm, matter-of-fact way. You can say: "We're going to see a teacher today to do some activities together." Avoid terms like "testing" or "playing games."
Optimal Timing: Morning appointments (between 8:00 AM and 12:00 PM) are strongly recommended for younger children.
Routine & Rest: Ensure your child gets a good night's sleep and a good meal before arriving. Please arrive promptly at your scheduled time.
No Rewards Ahead of Time: Avoid promising special treats or rewards prior to the appointment, as excitement can interfere with focus.
Siblings: Please plan to attend without siblings so your child has a quiet, dedicated environment.

About the CAIS Admissions Process

Apply to your school(s) first. No school will consider an evaluation until your application for admission is on file with that school.
Book with one psychologist only. Your child is tested one time, and the results are shared with every CAIS school you designate.
Scheduling opens the day after Labor Day. Appointments are made by parents directly with the psychologist, not through the schools.
School interviews happen separately. In addition to testing, each CAIS school conducts its own child interview or observation, typically November through February. The schools will contact you directly to schedule.
Admissions notifications: TK/JK/K applicants are notified Friday, February 26, 2027, with contracts due March 5, 2027. Grade 1 applicants are notified Thursday, April 9, 2027, with contracts due April 16, 2027.
Bilingual and ESL applicants: a later test date can be beneficial, and an additional Nonverbal Index score is available upon request.

Important Policies & Guidelines

Submit School Applications First: You must complete an official application for admission with your designated school(s) before testing. Schools will not process test scores without an active application on file.
Test Validity & Coaching: To ensure fair and accurate results, children cannot be tutored, coached, or re-tested. Parents will sign a Test Validity Verification Form at the testing office. Any indication of prior test practice or coaching will invalidate your child's application across all CAIS schools.
Payment Terms: Once an appointment is confirmed, payment via Credit Card or Zelle is due within 24 hours (or within 1 week if paying by check, arranged in advance). Appointments booked after January 1, 2027 are strictly non-refundable.
Cancellation Policy: A $100 non-refundable fee applies to all cancellations. Cancellations made within 72 hours of the scheduled appointment time (or after Wednesday for Monday appointments) are not eligible for a refund.

Genesis was founded in 2020 by Dr. Chad Kraska in order to fill a niche for high-quality neuropsychological assessments in Charlotte, NC, for individuals with neurodevelopmental deficits who are in need of treatment. These strength-based assessments provide clarity for the entire treatment team and chart a clear path forward.
